Mike Browning forms Nocturnus after leaving Morbid Angel in 1986. The Key (recorded at Morrisound in June 1990 with Tom Morris, Earache) is the first death metal album built around a keyboard player and is described in the reference literature as the first progressive death metal album; Thresholds (1992) follows before the band fires Browning in 1993.
Lineup: Mike Browning (drums, vocals), Mike Davis and Sean McNenney (guitars), Louis Panzer (keyboards), Jeff Estes then Jim O'Sullivan (bass)
